Miller DiPietro Associates/Partnership :: Procedures :: Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry measures bone mass and aids in the early detection of osteoporosis. The test measures your bone mineral density (or BMD) and compares it to others in your age group, weight, sex and ethnic background to determine your bone status and risk of fracture.

How to Prepare for Your Bone Densitometry Examination

No preparation is ordinarily needed for a bone densitometry exam. It may be the easiest medical test you'll ever undergo. There are no needles, dietary restrictions or other preparation.

Bone densitometry does, however, involve a small amount of radiation (less than 10% that of a typical x-ray), so if you are pregnant or believe you may be pregnant it is important to inform your physician before having this test administered.

Typically, your exam will last approximately five minutes for a spine or femur examination, or fifteen for a total body exam.
