Miller DiPietro Associates/Partnership :: Procedures :: Stereotactic Biopsy

A Stereotactic Biopsy is a minimally-invasive method of sampling body tissue via an image-guided needle. It uses multiple coordinates to determine the location of a tumor or nodule so that a sample may be obtained. This procedure is done as a follow-up to a mammogram, after that that exam shows an abnormal mass or tissue change.

How to Prepare for Your Stereotactic Biopsy

Most women who undergo this procedure do not have cancer; however, you may wish to have a friend or relative come along with you to lend support and drive you home. If you are taking aspirin or a blood thinner, you may be advised to stop taking the medication three days prior to the exam.

The procedure is done under local anesthetic and is relatively painless; a small nick is made in the skin and a needle is inserted in the approximate position of the mass and then guided more precisely via x-ray. Several core samples are extracted with the needle, after which a final x-ray is obtained to determine whether the mass has been removed completely. If it has, a small clip will be left in place so that the site may be found if future tests find the samples to be cancerous. The nick in the skin is small enough that no suture is required, though you should avoid any strenuous activities for 24 hours after the biopsy.

This procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes, and leaves no scar.
