Ultrasound, commonly used during pregnancy to determine the health of a fetus, but also used to capture images of other fluid-filled spaces in the body, employs repetitive arrays of ultrasound beams which are composited to form an internal image. How to Prepare for Your Ultrasound No preparation is ordinarily needed for an ultrasound exam. The exam is extremely safe because it involves no radiation. During this painless procedure, a gel will be applied to the area being imaged; it helps to conduct the sound waves.
